Healthcare Support Overseas

Bangkok Hospital Group – Thailand

The Bangkok Hospital Group is one of Thailand’s largest private healthcare networks, operating more than 50 hospitals nationwide with thousands of beds and specialist medical centres covering a wide range of clinical services.

For Australian Defence Force veterans living in Thailand, many Bangkok Hospital facilities have International Services Departments experienced in working with overseas patients, including those whose treatment is funded through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA).

These teams can assist in coordinating treatment approvals and billing arrangements for veterans receiving care related to accepted DVA conditions.

Why Bangkok Hospital Is Often Suitable for Veterans

Comprehensive Medical Services

Bangkok Hospital facilities provide a wide range of medical services, including:

  • Emergency and intensive care
  • Orthopaedics and neuro-spine services
  • Mental health services
  • Cardiology and stroke care
  • Rehabilitation and physiotherapy
  • Oncology and specialist clinics

This allows veterans to receive diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management for many service-related conditions.

International Patient Departments

Most Bangkok Hospital locations operate international patient services teams that assist overseas patients with:

  • Coordinating treatment approvals
  • Communicating with insurance providers or government agencies
  • Translation and interpreter support
  • Appointment coordination.

These teams can assist in managing communication with DVA where treatment is related to accepted conditions.

Clinical Quality

Several Bangkok Hospital facilities hold international accreditation, including Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation at some sites.

These accreditations indicate that the hospitals meet recognised international standards for healthcare delivery.

Accessing Care as a Veteran

Veterans living in Thailand who require treatment related to accepted DVA conditions should generally follow a process similar to the following.

Step 1 — Register With a Local Hospital

Veterans should first register with their preferred Bangkok Hospital facility and provide:

  • Passport identification
  • Local address details
  • Relevant medical history where available.

This allows the hospital to establish a patient file.

Step 2 — Provide Evidence of Accepted Conditions

Veterans should provide documentation showing their DVA-accepted conditions, which can be obtained from the MyGov / DVA portal.

This helps the hospital determine whether treatment may be eligible for approval through DVA.

Step 3 — Treatment Approval

For treatment related to accepted conditions, hospitals may contact DVA to seek approval prior to treatment.

Obtaining approval in advance helps clarify whether the treatment will be covered under DVA arrangements.

Step 4 — Treatment and Follow-Up

Once treatment is approved, care proceeds through the hospital in the normal way.

Follow-up appointments and ongoing care can continue as required under the treatment plan.

Conditions Commonly Treated

Bangkok Hospital facilities provide treatment for a wide range of conditions that may be accepted by DVA, including:

  • PTSD and other mental health conditions
  • Chronic pain and spinal conditions
  • Orthopaedic injuries
  • Hearing-related conditions
  • Cardiovascular conditions
  • Diabetes and endocrine disorders
  • Neurological conditions
  • Cancer treatment and monitoring.

Important Notes

Veterans should be aware that:

  • DVA approval is normally required for treatment related to accepted conditions
  • Coverage depends on the individual veteran’s accepted conditions and eligibility
  • Not all treatment may be approved.

Veterans are encouraged to confirm arrangements with both the hospital and DVA before undergoing treatment.

Role of ADFV-OHS

ADFV-OHS does not provide medical treatment and does not direct veterans to any specific healthcare provider.

However, we may assist veterans by:

  • Explaining how DVA overseas treatment arrangements work
  • Helping organise documentation for DVA claims
  • Assisting with coordination of services such as Household Services or Attendant Care where required.
