Household Services and the 1 July 2026 Changes

DVA Household Services Support

Household Services are funded by the Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) to assist veterans whose accepted service-related conditions affect their ability to maintain their home environment.

These services help veterans remain safe and independent in their homes by providing practical assistance with domestic tasks.

Household Services may include support such as:

  • Domestic cleaning
  • Laundry assistance
  • Lawn mowing and gardening
  • Grocery shopping
  • General home maintenance
  • Accessibility modifications where approved

Approval is based on the functional impact of accepted service-related conditions, not simply age or convenience.

Who Can Access Household Services

Household Services are currently available to eligible veterans under the following legislation:

  • Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act (MRCA)
  • Safety, Rehabilitation and Co
    mpensation (Defence-related Claims) Act (DRCA)

Veterans whose accepted conditions affect their ability to manage household tasks may be eligible to receive support through these programs.

Important Changes from 1 July 2026

Legislative changes scheduled to take effect on 1 July 2026 will expand access to certain support programs for additional groups of veterans.

In particular, some veterans assessed under the Veterans’ Entitlements Act (VEA) may become eligible to seek Household Services support from this date.

Claims from VEA veterans cannot be lodged before 1 July 2026, however many veterans are preparing their claims in advance due to the expected increase in demand once applications open.

Preparing a Claim

Successful Household Services claims normally require clear evidence that accepted service-related conditions prevent the veteran from performing specific household tasks.

This may involve:

  • Medical documentation
  • Functional assessments
  • clear explanation of daily living limitations.

Each claim is assessed individually by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

How ADFV-OHS Assists

ADFV-OHS assists veterans living overseas by coordinating the practical delivery of Household Services once approved.

Our support may include:

  • Assisting with claim preparation
  • Coordinating supporting documentation
  • Identifying suitable local service providers
  • Organising service schedules
  • Managing invoicing and payment arrangements

Our aim is to ensure veterans can access the support they are entitled to through DVA without unnecessary administrative complexity.

Veterans Living Overseas

Household Services may also be accessible to eligible veterans living outside Australia.

However, organising services internationally can present additional challenges such as:

  • Identifying suitable providers
  • Managing scheduling and payments
  • Ensuring services meet DVA requirements.

ADFV-OHS assists by coordinating these services so that veterans living overseas can access their entitlements more easily.
